Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Chapter 1

THE WAR--When the novel opens, Richard Perry, a young high school student is signing up for the army, thinking that he will never see combat. On the way over to Vietnam, no one seems terribly concerned about the war as rumors circulate that peace is not far off. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the idea of wartime and to discuss the foreshadowing that peacetime in the novel presents.

Lesson

1) As a class, compare/contrast Richie's view of the war with Peewee's view of the war. What is the same about their opinions? What is different? Is there anything unexpected/surprising in this comparison?

2) Divide the class into groups of three or four students to research the Vietnam War in 1967. Was peace just around the corner, or was it a false hope? How do you see the hopes of peacetime echoed...
