For their first firefight the correspondents ignore the commanders' orders and pack rock and roll tapes and marijuana. The soldiers grab ammunition out of crates and arm themselves with weapons that are not standard issue. The soldiers take whatever weapons they prefer and as much ammunition as they wish to carry.

2. What is Soc Trang and what does it promise Herr?

Soc Trang is a military camp. The location of the camp promises to bring Herr into a firefight. The camp is full of anticipation all night long. The soldiers tape ammunition rounds together so that they will not run out in the middle of battle. Soldiers load up on ammunition and weapons waiting for something to happen. Nothing ever happens and in the morning Herr departs by helicopter.
