From the beginning of the story, Andy Dufresne and Red Smith become acquaintances and then friends with a strong bond. The objective of this lesson is to learn and distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of the friendship between Andy and Red.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: How do Andy and Red meet and how do we know they are friends? Was Red the first friend Andy made in prison? Was it hard to trust Red since he was an inmate who was actually guilty of murder?

2) Partner Discussion: Divide the class into groups of 2-3. One main advantage of the friendship between Andy and Red was that they both had someone to confide in, which led to less fear and frustration while incarcerated. What other advantages did the friendship between Andy and Red hold? Were there any disadvantages to the friendship...
