Objective

Objective: Students will examine methods of characterization in a text.

1) In small groups, students will choose any character from the text and identify the methods of characterization the author uses to develop his or her personality and motivations. Sharing their information aloud, the class will attempt to recognize the most powerful forms of characterization used in Garcia Marquez' text.

2) As a whole group, students will brainstorm methods of characterization, then use examples from the text to illustrate each form. Reviewing the information, students will attempt to identify Garcia Marquez' purpose in revealing his characters using these methods.

3) Individually, students will write a paragraph identifying any character they feel is particularly well-developed in the chapter. Sharing these paragraphs aloud, students will support their statements with examples from the chapter. As a whole group, students will attempt to identify the author's most successful use of characterization.
