Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Waking up to get water every morning is a constant challenge for Carolina. Many times the line is very long. In order to avoid the wait, she tries to way up earlier and earlier. Write an essay that gives detail to Carolina's morning water routine. What are the women like who wait around for water with her? What kind of personalities do they possess? What other troubles does Carolina experience on her daily trip to get water? Be sure to provide examples to support your opinions.

Essay Topic 2

Family is a theme that runs strongly throughout Child of the Dark. While not all families are perfect, Carolina writes about them often. Write an essay that explores the theme of family as it pertains to the autobiography. In which instances does family prove to be an important element throughout the book? What is the family dynamic like for most families in the favela? Explain your rationale by providing examples from the book.

Essay Topic 3

The photographs of Carolina that are included in Child of the Dark were taken after her book was published. Each picture portrays the elements of daily favela life. Write an essay that explains what is going on in each picture. Make sure to include who is in the photograph and what they are doing. Think about what makes these photographs engaging and special. What about their composition and execution is the most interesting? Use examples from the book to support your argument.
