Part 1: Chs 1-8

• Kyle Kingsbury is a rich, spoiled high school freshman who has been nominated for Homecoming King. He already feels that he has won it.

• Kendra is overweight Goth girl who is very unpopular. She feels that the entire Homecoming ceremony is ridiculous and elitist. Kyle and Kendra argue over the Homecoming ceremony and swap insults.

• At PE, Kyle is still upset about Kendra's words. Trey doesn't understand why.

• Kyle's girlfriend, Sloane, is introduced as a "bottle blonde" who is not very bright. She is angry about hearing from her friends that Kyle has invited Kendra to the dance.

• Sloane approves of Kyle's plan, but warns that he had better not ever try something like that on her.

• Kendra makes Kyle uncomfortable by showing her affection publicly.
• Kyle finds a single white rose...
