An epistolary book is a book written in the form of a series of letters, diary or journal entries, or a series of newspaper articles, e-mail messages, or other non-fictional documents. Joan Anderson's non-fiction book "A Year by the Sea" is a journal of Joan's year at a seaside cottage in Cape Cod. Joan went to Cape Cod to separate from her husband and find herself after many years in a traditional marriage and the traditional female gender roles of being the perfect wife, mother, hostess and nurturer. Joan felt she had subjugated her desires and needs over the years to the desires and needs of her family, and she wanted to work on herself a while and decide whether to continue her marriage since she felt it had grown stale and unhappy.
