Have the students emulate Martha's commitment to her diary by writing their own diaries for at least a month. The resulting work can be self-published and shared if appropriate.

Maine Travelogue

Create a travelogue about Maine, the state where Martha Ballard lived most of her life. Be sure to include highlights of attractions, events and natural resources that will appeal to people considering a trip to this beautiful state.

A Trip Down the Kennebec

Martha spends much time traveling the Kennebec River to get to her patients. If geographically possible, take a whitewater rafting or floating trip down the Kennebec River. If you are not able to visit the area, do some research on the river and what it would be like today as opposed to the time when Martha knew it.

At Home in Hallowell
