On the death of Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir, civil war breaks out as his two sons vie to succeed him. Backed by Badr al-Jamali s son and successor al-Afdal, the victor reigns over the shrinking empire until 1101 as al-Mustadi. Hassan-e Sabbah, leader of the Assassins, calls the new caliph a usurper and refuses to accept the authority of al-Mustadi and his descendants.
