Buyid brother Ahmad occupies Baghdad, capital of the Muslim Empire, forcing caliph al-Mustaqft to name him amir-al-umara (prince of princes, or commander in chief). Though the 'Abbasid dynasty continues into the thirteenth century, the caliphs become the puppets of the amir.
