The Turk Sebuktigin, a former slave who has married the daughter of the governor of the town of Ghazna (modern-day Ghazni, Afghanistan), is recognized as his father-in-law's successor by the ruling Iranian Samanid dynasty. Over the next twenty years Sebiiktigin rejects Samanid control and establishes the Ghaznavid dynasty, extending his territory east to the Indian border.
