A historical novel, Out of This Furnace, focuses on three generations of one Slovak family as they made their way from Hungary to the steel mills of America and their fight for survival. Each generation’s struggle reveals more of the perils of the steel mill industry with the novel’s renowned stark commentary on the ordeals of immigration labour and the attempts at the unionization of steelworkers starting in 1889.
