The beginning of the book relates George Kracha's journey from Hungary to America in the fall of 1881. Although George receives instructions from a brother-in-law in America about some of the dangers to immigrants, George takes it lightly. He thinks that he knows all about the dangers already.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: What family connection does George have to America? What instructions have been sent to George by way of a letter? How does George feel about the letter?

2) Group Discussion: What should George do if he gets lost after he arrives in New York? Does George anticipate any trouble about finding White Haven?

3) Paragraph Writing: Write a paragraph that explores why George should have taken Andrej's letter more seriously.

4) Homework:: Write a paragraph that focuses on George's confidence in himself based on his thoughts about the letter.
