Chapters 18 and 19 Summary

In Chapter 18, Mr. Grayson invites everyone to dinner to celebrate the purchase of the hotel. Evie decides that it is time to wear the moonlight dress. Peter admires the dress but Joe and Beverly are angry. They make her go upstairs and change. As Joe yells about Peter, Beverly tells Evie that it has to stop. She is crying. Evie is not.

That night at dinner, Joe suggests again that the group go fishing. He doesn't get much interest. As they get ready to leave, Peter tries to talk to Evie but Joe interrupts them angrily. Peter suggests to Joe that Joe does not believe that he is good enough for Evie. Peter tells Joe quietly that it is Joe who appears to be a dirty rat, not him. It is at this point that Evie realizes that Joe is afraid...
