Rufus

Rufus acts as a symbol for the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. Rufus is intuitive of those around him and represents the essence of humanity once the ego has been peeled away. As the humans around him grapple with their needs and fears and hopes, Rufus simply serves those around him. He relies on his instincts and his innate sense of right and wrong, not mired down by the human brain. As Evangeline observes, despite her reluctance to trust him, he is "a being that could transmute in an instant to flying muscle and rightful rage, who'd die for her if there was ever a need" (79). Rufus symbolizes simplicity in the face of the complexities of human relationships, as well as the idea that all living beings have a finite time here on earth but are connected beyond that lifespan.
