Summary

Clare began this chapter at the festival hotel during a reception. While standing, Clare drops into a layer below consciousness, going down a never-ending staircase. After she came to, she was halfway down a staircase, empty drink in her hand. She spotted Davi, the critic she sat next to on the plane, and Arlo, a man she met her first night in Havana. Clare joined Davi and Arlo in conversation. Davi and Arlo were headed to an art exhibit and invited Clare to come along, which she accepted. Clare learned that Davi and Arlo used to work together, Arlo had been traipsing around the world, and has returned to Havana for a documentary about suicide. The three take a taxi to the art exhibit.
