Scarf

The scarf that Anna drops at the beginning of the novel symbolizes the connection that Anna and Eve will share together. A scarf is an object that can tie something together, and it does so with Anna and Eve. A scarf is also an object of comfort, which both Anna and Eve become for each other.

Dogs

The dogs represent the transformation of love for Luke and the fear of falling in love for Anna. At the beginning of the novel, Luke loves dogs and Anna will do anything to stay away from them. Luke ends up bending to Anna and staying away from the dogs. But, when confronted with a dog running up to them, Luke protects her from the dog. Luke is learning what he needs to sacrifice for love and Anna is learning to let herself be vulnerable in love.
