Black Marks

The black marks are symbols of flu and death. Stu and the others see that Charles’ dead wife and child both have black marks like bruises on their swollen necks. From this point forward when King mentions that a character has a swollen throat with dark smudges, the reader can be certain that the character has the flu and will not live much longer.

Red Eyes

The red eyes are symbols of evil. In Stu’s first dream about Mother Abigail, he sees red eyes watching him from the cornfield. It is indicated that the dark man, Randall Flagg, has red eyes.

Coughs/Sneezes

Coughs and sneezes are symbols of the spread of disease. When characters sneeze or cough, it indicates either that they are spreading the disease to others, or that they have contracted the disease from another infected person.
