Summary

In Chapter 25, Nick spent his days going between Jane’s house to care for her and the jail to care for the prisoners. One morning, Jane seemed better. Her fever had broken, but Nick could see dark smudges on her neck. Back at the jail, Vince was dead. Mike pointed out that Billy was sick as well. When Nick slept that night he dreamed of a cornfield. He had the comforting feeling he was at home until he sensed something evil watching him.

The next morning Mike was sick. Jane was feverish again. Nick asked her to call the doctor, but she received no answer from the doctor or nurse. At lunch Billy was dead. Mike begged Nick to let him out. Nick complied. After he watched Mike escape down the street, Nick felt he had done the right thing.
