It was Palacios who took Daniel to the hospital, and the story told was that Fumero had been in the old house alone when he had been attacked and killed by a gang of thieves.

Daniel woke up in a hospital room surrounded by his father and friends. He had almost died and been unconscious for eight days. Everyone was relieved that Daniel had survived. Daniel's father took him a notebook and the Victor Hugo fountain pen in case he wanted to write. One evening, Daniel woke up and saw the figure of Julián Carax.
