City of Shadows - 1954: Chapters 28 - 29 Summary
Bea tells Daniel the story of the house they are in. The house had a name: The Angel of the Mist. It was built in 1899 by a tycoon who had made his fortune in Cuba. This millionaire had come back to Spain with a young American bride. He also had a beautiful mulatto maid, who was said to be his lover. Less than a year after having moved in, the tycoon was found dazed and handcuffed to his armchair. Both his wife and maid were dead. There was blood all over the house. It was believed that both the tycoon and his wife had been poisoned by the maid, who had subsequently committed suicide. The tycoon was paralyzed for life as a result of the poisoning.
