Daniel and Fermin begin their investigations by going to the school. Before going though, Fermin outline's what they know of Carax. They know that Julian and Jorge Aldaya were childhood friends and went to school together. A conflict arises that ruins the friendship. The obvious problem would be Julian's relationship with Penelope, Jorge's sister. In 1919 Julian escapes to Paris. Julian never receives Penelope's letter where she tells him she is a prisoner in her home and that Jorge is after Julian to kill him. In the years in Paris Julian plays piano at a brothel and writes a few books. When he Julian decides to marry a rich widow, he is involved in a duel with an unknown person and disappears.
