Chapters 17, 18, 19, 20 Summary

In chapter seventeen, Malcolm meets with Pat Surhoff, a U.S. Marshal and Agent Hanski. They show Malcolm the indictment against Quinn. They have come to take him out of prison. The urgency is due to Quinn's having mentioned Malcolm's name during his interrogation.

Malcolm enjoys his first taste of freedom in five years as he drives away with Surhoff and Hanski. He already knows where he wants to begin his new life. They decide on a new name for Malcolm. He chooses Max Reed Baldwin.

In chapter eighteen, they stop at a Best Western near Morgantown, West Virginia. Max is given his own room and some new clothes. Max is still unable to fully trust anyone working for the federal government. He still remembers the lie he was told about not being prosecuted.

Max tells them he wants the plastic surgery now...
