Joshua Calvert is a young man of striking looks and charm. Though of respectable intelligence, Joshua's real strength lies in his uncanny ability to react instinctually to dynamic situations to profitable or life-saving effect.

Joshua's father dies when he is a young boy and Joshua never knows his mother. His father leaves him an old, spheroid battleship named the Lady Mac, after his father's favorite Shakespeare play, Macbeth. The battleship sustains considerable damage on his father's last mission and Joshua spends the first twenty-five years of his life accruing the money for its repair. While working as a scavenger in the Laymil orbital ruins, Joshua discovers an intact section of a crystalline memory storage cube.
