Summary

On the way home, Conn thinks about how he is going to find his own stone. Nevery begins asking him questions about his past, including who raised him. Conn reveals his mother, a woman named Black Maggie, raised him and taught him how to pick locks and pockets. He adds she is now dead and that Crowe is responsible for her death. Conn changes the subject and says that he recognizes Pettivox from Crowe’s home. Nevery is doubtful of this. He believes Conn is just bitter because of Pettivox’s doubts about his apprenticeship. He orders Conn to not speak on the subject again.

In Chapter 15, Conn begins his studies at the academicos. He arrives to find a female student with red hair waiting for him. She says her name is Rowan and that Brumbee has arranged for them to work...
