Chapter 5, The Erotic Traveler Summary

The Erotic Traveler. Desiderio walks for a time after the landslide, unsure of where to go. Desiderio has little luck finding food or people sympathetic to him. One night, Desiderio is sitting by the side of the road when two men in a horse drawn carriage pull up beside him and offer him a ride. Desiderio is happy for the ride and quickly agrees, but is saddened again when they drive past the site of the landslide. The older, larger man who offered Desiderio a ride introduces himself as a Count from Lithuania. The Count claims to be a man who is aroused and excited by natural disasters, such as the landslide. With him is a younger man whose face is completely bandaged because of syphilis who appears to be the Count's assistant.
