Summary

In Chapter 32, Falk goes to Gretchen’s for a date. When Gretchen goes into the next room to take a phone call, Falk looks through one of Gretchen’s photo albums. He sees a picture of Luke holding a baby in a hospital. Falk sees on the baby’s wrist tag that it is Gretchen’s son, Lachie. In Chapter 33, Falk asks Gretchen if Luke is Lachie’s father. Gretchen, enraged, denies the accusation and says that Luke was simply visiting her in the hospital. Gretchen also says that she knows that Falk and Luke’s alibis for the day Ellie died are false. She says she knows where Luke was that day, and she forces Falk out of the house. In Chapter 34, Falk returns to the pub and sees Whitlam leaving.
