Summary

The Deep End is written as a diary. The entries take place in August. The first diary entry is identified as "Wednesday." Greg Heffley opens by describing his family situation. He lives with his Mom, Dad, older brother Rodrick, and three-year-old brother Manny. While he loves his family, they are all feeling they have been cooped up together too much recently. For two months, the family has been living in Gramma's basement while their new house is being built. Though Gramma has a guest room, no one in Greg's family is allowed to use it. Gramma also insists they all remain out of sight when she has friends over, meaning they do not have access to the bathroom or the kitchen at those times.
