Diary of a Wimpy Kid Overview

Jeff Kinney's young adult epistolary novel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, catapults a reader back in time to undergo middle school at its most brutal. For main character, Greg Heffley, this is not a period of life that comes easily; it is full of disappointments, lost opportunities, shattered friendships, and fights with terrorizing teenagers. Greg and best friend, Rowley, attempt to navigate the halls of school with dwarfed confidence and no clue on how to become more popular. Greg's main goal is to gain notoriety, while Rowley blindly joins him for the ride. Either way, the author does a comical job at portraying the trials and tribulations of young people facing entertaining challenges. The reader is led to believe that a likely victory awaits Greg at the end of the school year, while Kinney's vision more immediately walks the line of reality and steers away from any fairy tale formatting.
