Book 1 Chapter 1 Summary

The book opens on a boat in a swelling sea. The boat is crashing into the violent waves. There are two explosions inside the cabin. A man bursts out of the cabin and is obviously injured. A second man comes out of the cabin in pursuit of the first. The second man raises a gun and shoots the first. The boat swells and there is another gunshot. The injured man falls overboard into the sea.

In the sea, the man begins to drown. He seems to accept the fact but is holding on, waiting for something. Finally, there is an enormous explosion. Debris from the explosion has struck the man in the chest, and he is in pain. He struggles in the water but finds peace. He seems to be drowning.

In the morning, the storm has passed, and the sea...
