Chapter 14 Summary

Roaring Abel is summoned to Valancy's home to fix the front porch. When he shows up, he is drunk, but in the beginning stages of it. After dinner, Vaalncy goes out to the front porch to talk with Roaring Abel. Roaring Abel is Cecilia Gay's father. Barney Snaith is rumored to be the father of Cecilia Gay's child. Valancy and Cecilia were schoolmates. When Cissy gives birth to her baby, she refuses to declare who the father is. The baby lives for a year and then dies. Cissy is dying of consumption. Ironically, in the Christian community in which they live, it is only Barney Snaith that drops in to visit and care for Cissy. Valancy insists that Cissy must have someone to take care of her and asks if Valancy will do as a housekeeper.
