Chapter 5 Summary

It is Valancy's 29th birthday. While she is in her Uncle Benjamin's shop buying tea, he is making jokes about Valancy not being married at her age. For the first time, Valancy stands up to her uncle. Although Valancy has always said she doesn't want a beau to protect her feelings from being hurt, she admits to herself for the first time that she does want a husband and children. the authors keeps mentioning Valancy's slanted eyes and dark hair.
