Chapters 25-27 Summary

Neria is on the highway headed to Miami when the professor's van runs out of gas. A group of construction workers looking for jobs in the hurricane-ravaged areas stop to give her gas. The men then insist on following her back to her house in order to help her with reconstruction; Neria has no choice but to allow them to follow her. At Augustine's house, Max receives a visit from a friend of Augustine's who is an FBI agent. They talk for a while about Max's kidnapping and the possibility that Bonnie has been brainwashed by the same kidnapper. The FBI agent does not appear to take Max seriously.

Snapper makes Edie stop at a liquor store to buy whiskey. Bonnie is hot and asks for a Coke, quickly pouring it down her blouse when it comes. Snapper is distracted by...
