Chapters 23-24 Summary

Edie drives while Snapper holds the gun on Skink and Bonnie. Snapper considers killing everyone in the car, including Lester, but he does not have enough bullets and he needs Edie to cash the insurance checks. However, Snapper begins to grow nervous when Skink makes comments about the state trooper he beat several days before. Edie hears what Skink has to say and becomes upset at the idea of Snapper hurting a state trooper. Snapper shows her the ring he stole from the trooper before he throws it out the window. Snapper could not pawn the ring and did not see any other reason to keep it. Edie becomes angry and to defy Snapper, she stops on a bridge to watch the dolphins in the ocean. Snapper fires a bullet through the roof of the car to spur her on.
