Chapter 10 Summary

Rialla and Tris split up. Rialla knows that Terran and Winterseine are on horseback, so she deliberately takes the roughest, most overgrown path she can, in exactly the opposite direction Tris is taking. On the second day, they catch her, and ask her why she ran away. Rialla pretends that she is only obeying her legal master, Laeth, who told her to go with a certain man. Winterseine lashes Rialla one time with his whip before Terran stops him, reminding him how valuable she is. They tie her hands, and leash her so that she is walking behind their horses. Rialla's leg is not healed enough to endure the fast, constant travel, and when it cramps, she falls down, strangling herself with the leash. Winterseine's horse drags her for several paces before Terran cuts the leash. Rialla is covered with scrapes and bruises...
