The Clement Street Starter

The Clement Street starter symbolizes the theme of mystery. Throughout the novel, Lois tries to understand the magical behavior of the starter, from its odd humming to the faces that it reveals in the completed sourdough. Eventually, Lois realizes that the starter appears to have a greedy personality. However, despite all of Beoreg’s attempts to explain the Mazg history and Lois’s attempts to find the origin of the starter, Lois never truly learns why the starter behaves like it does, so it remains an enigma.

The Dextrous

The Dextrous advance the debate of nature versus technology in this novel. Although they are humans, their lifestyles are portrayed as extremely robotic. For example, they appear to do nothing but work, and most of them consume Slurry instead of food. Therefore, they represent deviation from humanity as a negative thing.
