Chapter 44, Conversations at the Party Summary
Jack is dancing with a beautiful woman in the full ballroom. Jack then finds himself talking to Grady, the caretaker who killed both his family and himself in the hotel. Grady tells Jack that he must take care of his son, and that his son is the key to advancement within the hotel. As he speaks to Grady, he can see a group of individuals, Derwent at the head, practically tormenting a man in a dog suit. Jack is suddenly sure that he, too, is nothing by a puppet to the hotel, and that his place is not one of high priority, but of simple servitude. He tells Grady he will take care of his son in his own way, and Grady leads him to the clock by the mantle. Looking in, Jack can see small figures, one of himself and one of Danny, come to meet in the middle...
