Section 9: Chapter 10 and Ninth Picture Summary
In chapter ten, Hollis is almost shocked to see Old Man's Mountain rising above her when they finally reach the exit to Branches. As they reach the house, she tells Josie they will build a fire, knowing they have winter and maybe spring but will need to find somewhere else by summer. Remembering her last morning in Branches when she walked to the bus station, Hollis recalls her worst moment was realizing she would never see her drawing box again. Telling Josie they are home, Hollis wonders what the Old Man would think of her if he found out and begs him not to mind in her head. After leading Josie up the back steps, Hollis smashes the small kitchen window, allowing them to enter the house. Turning on the lights and heat and building a fire, Hollis tells Josie that this is their place...
