Summary

In Chapter 20, in the car on the way back to their motel Mila tries to get Gil to explain what happened at the cabin. He claims he didn’t know they were going to run into Lynda and that he didn’t know if Jake was Matthew’s son. He asks Mila if she thinks Matthew told Suzanne about Lynda. Mila doesn’t say anything, but guesses that he didn’t. Gil admits the story is getting messier and messier. Mila suggests there is some conspiracy between the adults to make it appear as if their strange and complicated lives were perfectly normal. Gil tries to explain it isn’t a conspiracy, just a series of bad choices that pile up until a person can’t find his way out from all of the consequences of the bad decisions they’ve made.
