Spren

Spren represent the basic elements and emotions of the world. There are numerous types of spren in the novel, but all of them are tied to some kind of emotion, such as anticipation or fear, or an ideal, such as creativity and honor. The most important spren are those bound to the main characters or the Unmade Midnight Mother who has a fascination with humanity. The spren are also a part of the Desolation, as it is their ability to fuse with the dead parshmen that creates Voidbringers. Spren control many things in Roshar, including the storm (Stormfather), and the parshmen (voidspren). In many ways, spren are the basis of the world, and many people try to extort them for their own gain, either by trapping them in Fabrials or binding to them.
