January 1 - February 22 Summary

Stargirl Caraway starts writing letters to her "once (and future) boyfriend" Leo on January 1st. In this first letter, she tells him about the special place that she's found to meditate, the place she calls Enchanted Hill because when she meditates or "mind washes," the light from the sun seeps through her closed eyelids and she feels as if she is basking in gold. Nearby, there is a cemetery where Stargirl watches an elderly man, Charles, pass his time next to the tombstone of his wife, Grace. One day while Stargirl is mind washing, she opens her eyes to see a five-year-old girl staring back at her, nearly touching noses. The girl introduces herself as Dootsie Pringle before her mother runs up and apologizes her daughter's behavior.
