Chapter 40 Summary

Cole calls Lucy, but their conversation is cold and depressing. The next day, Cole goes to Parker Center, where he takes a plea bargain and is convicted of a felony without having to spend any time in jail. He will lose his private detective license, and his license to carry a gun. He goes from the LAPD to the hospital, where he undergoes further surgery and has a cast put on his shoulder. His first visitor is Lucy, who does not know if she can forgive him for how deeply he betrayed her. Next, a tearful Frank Garcia arrives and promises Cole that he will do anything he can to make Cole's life easier, for the rest of his life. Finally, Krantz arrives with a group of detectives and reveals that Pike's car.....
