Chapters 36 through 38 Summary

In chapter thirty-six, Conrad joins Belly, helping carry out trash bags. He asks if she'd called Laurel and she hates to admit she had, expecting him to say something derogatory about calling her mom. Instead, he thanks her for making the call. The meal is ready by the time Mr. Fisher arrives and he thanks Laurel for coming, believing she'll be helping him convince the boys his course of action is the correct one. Laurel soon points out that the boys have lost their mother and shouldn't be uprooted from the house as well. Mr. Fisher says he knows Susannah has always made Laurel feel as if she has a stake in the house but points out that Laurel doesn't share ownership in any form. Mr. Fisher stands to leave but Laurel demands he sit, then orders the three young people from the rom. No one argues with her demands....
