In chapter eight, Jeremiah remembers the moment the previous summer when he'd been clowning around with Belly at the poolside. Conrad joined them and a short time later Belly left to get a soda. Jeremiah says he watched Conrad watching Belly walk away and that it was a "game changing moment," one he knew meant that things would never again be the same.
