Dave enlists the assistance of a Spanish-speaking acquaintance to hold a family conversation with Annie and Alafair. Alafair tells her story with a special emphasis of the brutality of growing up in war-torn Central America. Alafair does the talking through the interpreter. Shortly after Dave decides to let the situation alone, Batist calls him and explains that a man who rented a boat from their bait shop has run it aground in the bayou and needs assistance.
