Paige remembers a time when her father is out of town and her mother took Paige to the zoo, instead of taking Paige to church as she is expected to do,. Paige and her mother go through many of the exhibits, the polar bears, the elephants, and the penguins. The zoo prides itself on its natural habitats. The elephant habitat is separated from the visitors by a moat filled with water. While standing there, Paige's mother decides to play in the water. Paige's mother takes off her shoes and splashes in the water, warning Paige not to join her. Then, at the penguin exhibit, Paige becomes separated from her mother in the dark exhibit area.
