After ten years of trying to conceive, Nicholas is a surprise to his parents. Nicholas is raised with everything a young man can want and does not know this is unusual until he begins college. Nicholas is always top in his class, always dates the most beautiful women, and wins a silver medal in the Olympics as a member of the American rowing team. Nicholas has never known failure and is afraid that someday failure will be unavoidable.

Nicholas cannot get the waitress out of his mind and stops by at closing the following night in order to ask her name.
