Summary

In Chapter 21: “Beyond Reach,” Lucy waits impatiently as Dad begins the process of studying the ten finalists. Lucy is shocked when her Dad chooses the entry of Lucas from Oklahoma. Lucy is devastated, not only for herself but for Grandma Lilah. Outside, Dad meets Nate and recognizes him from the contest. Lucy is horrified as Dad tells Nate he is the runner-up and that his photo of his grandmother being lost was a brave image. Nate is stunned and cannot believe what Lucy has done. Nate storms off. When Dad asks what that was all about, Lucy then confesses the truth about everything.

In Chapter 22: “At the Crossroads,” Dad is unhappy with the situation. He cannot allow Lucy to be the runner-up, as people will accuse him of picking his own daughter just because Lucy is his daughter. Lucy goes on to explain why...
