The zombie frog symbolizes how Gertie reinvents herself throughout the novel. She does not rely on one plan, but adapts to her situation to find the best to achieve her goal.

Locket

The locket symbolizes how Gertie needs to lock away her past with her mother. Gertie wants to give the locket back to Rachel, but does not do so. Instead it is a piece to remind Gertie of Rachel and move on.

Audition

The audition symbolizes Gertie’s ambition. Throughout the novel, Gertie spends more time studying and improving herself in order to become the best fifth grader in the world. The audition puts her in front of the whole school, achieving something that only one person can have. Gertie gets the part, proving herself in front of the school.
