Summary

In the story “Lunch at the Gotham Café,” the narrator, Steven Davis, came home from work to find a note informing him that his wife was leaving him. He wanted to believe it was a joke. Diane had never mentioned she was unhappy.

Steven took an instant dislike to Diane’s lawyer, William Humboldt, because he seemed to assume Steven was going to try to trick Diane out of what was hers. He also called him Steve, which Steven believed was too informal. He told the lawyer if he called him that name in person, he would probably hit him.

Four weeks later, Humboldt called to tell Steven that he, Diane, Steven, and his lawyer needed to talk. He suggested lunch at a place called the Gotham Café. Steven wanted to go mostly because he wanted to see if there...
